‘Night, Mother

‘Night, Mother

By Marsha Norman

“It is [playwright] Marsha Norman’s profound achievement that she brings both understanding and dignity to forgotten and tragic American lives.”

“A relentless exploration of the mother/daughter blood-tie, with all the guilt and hurt and misunderstanding and love that it entails…”

“In  ‘Night, Mother, Ms. Norman sends us crashing into one of life’s horrible unpreventable accidents, then leaves us helplessly contemplating the casualty list. Sterile, lonely lives.”

Announcing our new Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director

We are pleased and proud to announce Teko Dumoulin  as our new Artistic Director at The Modern Theater.

Teko began his time in our Spokane building as the Technical Director for Interplayers in their 2013-14 season and has been with us through the numerous, massive changes that have occurred.  He’s been a set designer, actor, stage manager, carpenter and light/sound board operator since the inception of The Modern-Spokane.

He is incredibly excited and honored to be taking this position with The Modern Theater. A Spokane native, Teko grew up in the performance and theatre community in Spokane, participated in Civic Theater’s Theater Academy, EWU’s ‘Stage Door to the Future’ program, and designed his very first set for a Ferris High School Production of The Music Man.

After high school, he moved through the west coast working in theatre and entertainment industries in Pullman, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area at theatres such as The New Door, Regional Theatre of the Palouse, and ACT.

Upon returning to Spokane in 2008, Teko began taking classes at EWU, and used the time to develop strong relationships with professors and students alike while designing sets and lights, acting, stage managing, and directing for over 40 productions.

Teko has also been a part of the local stagehands union since 2014 and works as the Scenic Designer and Scenic Design teacher for SFCC.

Introducing Kristin Kilmer as our new Managing Director

We’re pleased and proud to introduce Kristin Kilmer as the newest member of our Modern family. She’ll be taking over the huge responsibilities of being our Managing Director. Though she may be new to us, she’s no stranger to the performing arts scene in North Idaho and she has a deep history in the administration of the entertainment world.

Ms. Kilmer spent the earliest part of her career in the Film and TV industry. She started out as a production assistant in Seattle and worked her way through the industry until finally producing TV shows in Los Angeles. Along the way she gained plenty of experience in the art of “the ask,” … not just for money, but also negotiating trades, contracts, and agreements, everything needed to help the production team bring a concept to reality.

Her most recent position was the Director of Programming and Events at The Jacklin Arts & Cultural Center in Post Falls, ID, where she was solely responsible for the programming of the arts and culture events. Writing grants, procuring and maintaining sponsorships and yearly membership programs has also filled her task list all the while maintaining day to day operations.

Prior to her arrival to The JACC, she was with The Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre and worked with Ellen Travolta assisting the production of her Christmas shows at The CDA Resort. At
CST, she was hired as a part-time employee and quickly moved up to Box Office Manager, handling everything from ticket sales to designing the summer playbill. With Mrs. Travolta, she was referred to as her “right arm” while producing “A Christmas Cabaret” at The Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Kristin will be based out of The Modern-CDA and will have a host of duties including managing the day-to-day operations while working hard to help chart our path into the future.

We couldn’t be happier than to have her with us as we move forward!
