‘Night, Mother

‘Night, Mother

By Marsha Norman

“It is [playwright] Marsha Norman’s profound achievement that she brings both understanding and dignity to forgotten and tragic American lives.”

“A relentless exploration of the mother/daughter blood-tie, with all the guilt and hurt and misunderstanding and love that it entails…”

“In  ‘Night, Mother, Ms. Norman sends us crashing into one of life’s horrible unpreventable accidents, then leaves us helplessly contemplating the casualty list. Sterile, lonely lives.”

‘All is Calm’ – Christmas Eve at The Bing Crosby Theater

ll is Calm - Modern - CDA - danscape (542 of 554)

100 Years to the day ….

In 1914, at the Western front, out of the violence on Christmas Eve comes a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.” Thus began an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, and peace.

Directed by our own Abbey Crawford, All is Calm – The Christmas Truce of 1914 tells this remarkable story in the words and songs of the men who lived it. A select group of theaters was granted permission to perform this moving story on its 100th anniversary. The Modern Theater was among them. Friends of the Bing is thrilled to bring the Modern’s production to the stage of the Bing Crosby Theater on the exact date of that magical night. Spend Christmas Eve with us and see this celebration of the respite from the horrors of WWI when one small group of soldiers, for one night, truly believed in Peace on Earth.

The Spokesman Review said of The Modern Theater – Coeur d’Alene’s production, “The show’s strongest number is its rendition of “Silent Night,” in which the singers solemnly repeat the line “all is calm” in a measured and powerful manner, like a haunting  drumbeat.”

Join Friends of the Bing and the Modern Theater Coeur d’Alene for this special encore performance at The Bing Theater, Christmas Eve Night at 6:30 pm. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $15-25.

This time around, the year is 1969 and the world is a changing. As
folks protest the Vietnam War and women are demanding equal pay for equal work, in their small rural Minnesota community, the ladies of the Lutheran church basement kitchen are dealing with changes of their own.

us from serving the High School students at the Luther League Banquet to a church sponsored Missionary Night and the rise and fall of a Viking’s Super Bowl Sunday. From the elderly matriarch of the kitchen to the young mom-to-be, these women find strength in each other as they deal with the joys and upheavals from below the “House of God!”

  • Mrs. Lars Snustad (Vivian) – Melody Deatherage
  • Mrs. Gilmer Gilmerson (Mavis) – Tamara Schupman
  • Mrs. Elroy Engleson (Karin) – Jennifer Jacobs
